Welcome to LEDs Magazine’s Lighting for Health & Wellbeing newsletter for Nov. 21, 2022. Cold and flu season is picking up as more people are spending time indoors in the cooler climate zones. While we hear more widespread buzz about coronavirus variants, RSV, and respiratory illnesses these days, of course all manner of microbes have the potential to impact public health through air, surface, and water contamination. While questions remain about the types of pathogens and the percentage that can be deactivated by ultraviolet and visible-light disinfection methods, the currently understood capabilities are advantageous in helping global society to achieve access to clean water supplies, improved indoor-air quality, and reduced contact with contaminated surfaces in all sorts of spaces. But we must remain vigilant in staying up to date on the latest research studies and remember that science evolves because our understanding of how to interpret data and apply it to practice continues to expand.

Additional health and wellbeing content addresses mercury-lamp phaseouts, bringing circadian knowledge into practice, and more. Please stay in touch about content we publish and to propose contributed articles.

SunLike 3030 Series LEDs produce light that closely matches the spectrum of natural sunlight to deliver a healthier light experience by minimizing potential negative effects of artificial light. Accurately render objects in high quality light with this human-centric, nature-inspired light source. Available online at Digi-Key, Future, Avnet, and NRC Electronics.

FEATURED STORY
A literature review raises awareness of the need for more precise data to effectively apply visible light disinfection in appropriate scenarios, IAN ASHDOWN concludes in part two of his series.
STILL POPULAR!
Researchers wanna research. But other industry advocates say we know daylight rhythms improve our wellbeing. How will this impact the pace and practice of circadian lighting development?
An overview of the implementation of IEC62471 for photobiological safety evaluation remains at eyeball level for LEDs Magazine readers.
In 2021, several trials documented that violet radiation around 405 nm can over time deactivate viruses, although these systems require continuous operation for maximum efficacy.
IN THE INDUSTRY
California employs climate-saving policy strategy to eradicate fluorescent bulbs. Advocates HEIDI SANBORN, JORDAN WELLS, and MICHAEL SCHOLAND explain how.
Demand for surface-oriented wares is slow, following obsolescence. Air disinfection lines also sluggish.
The shift to LEDs is subjecting both humans and nature to what can be detrimental light frequencies, University of Exeter scientists report.
