DOE releases Gateway report on LED parking garage lighting demo
17 Nov 2008
Results: LED luminaires drew less than half the watts of the HPS luminaires, and maximum and minimum light levels were equal to or higher than the HPS.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published the report from the Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC), Portland, OR, demonstration of LED luminaires for commercial parking garage applications.

This GATEWAY demonstration report, prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, provides an overview of project results including lighting performance, quality, energy savings, payback analysis, and user feedback.

In this project, several high-pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires in PPMC's parking garage were replaced with LED luminaires for a side-by-side comparison. Two LED versions were tested—an existing version on the market since 2007 (Version 1), and a newer version of the same product (Version 2) which has 30% more light output and uses about 8% less power.

Key findings include:
• Each LED luminaire tested in the garage drew an average of 82 watts, versus 191 watts for each HPS luminaire.
• Maximum and minimum light levels were equal to or higher than the HPS luminaires.
• More than half of the users surveyed felt the LED luminaires provided more light than the HPS sources, particularly when viewing the relamped area through a security camera.
