UPDATE: The deadline for submission of the Letter of Intent is now midnight November 1, 2010 (GMT).

LightSavers is the first independent global trial that seeks to evaluate how LED luminaires and smart controls perform over time in real-world applications in large cities.

A Letter of Intent can be submitted using an online questionnaire - no formal paperwork is required to respond to the Notice.

Led by The Climate Group, LightSavers is looking to undertake LED streetlight trials in London on the major arterial roads. These roads facilitate the flow of mixed commercial and private traffic into and through the city, and typically require mounting heights for lighting of 10m or 12m.

This is the third trial following two similar trials which are currently being mobilised and for which suppliers have already been selected. Due to the success of the first invitation of expressions of interest of products it has been decided to invite further expressions of interest in order to derive best value and enhance the effectiveness of the trials.

While the specific location for this third trial has yet to be finalized, for the purposes of this Notice of Intent, one of the first two trial sites will serve as the reference for manufacturers’ consideration. LED Safari

An international delegation from The Climate Group’s global LightSavers program organized by Phil Jessup, Director of The Climate Group Lighting Program, attended the IES Street and Area Lighting Conference (SALC) in Huntington Beach, CA on September 26-29.

Cities represented include Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia; Hong Kong and Tianjin, China; Kolkata and New Delhi, India; Manila and Quezon City, the Philippines; London, UK; New York City, USA and Toronto, Canada.

Their visit, entitled “LED Safari,” entailed attendance at the LED Specification and Design Fundamentals course, a day of specially arranged municipal and technical presentations, a full day of IES SALC programming and an event “LED ... Listen, Educate, Demonstrate & Be SMART!” The latter was a matching and “speed-dating” event with 18 pre-arranged initial meetings covering LED street lighting, emerging technology and adaptive controls exhibitor manufacturers.

The next day included subsequent follow-up meetings with the requested “dates” or “matches.” At this event, the “London Calling!” was announced. One of the delegates present was Philip Thress from the United Kingdom, representing the project about to be launched in the City of London.

Delegates also attended the first annual meeting of the Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium and were treated to “City Lights” LED street lighting tours in Los Angeles and San Jose, as well as a visit to the Philips Lumileds facility in San Jose.
