RAB lighting rates LED products for 100,000 hours of life

SSL luminaire maker relies on IES TM-21 standard for projecting LED life to arrive at 100,000-hr rating for fixtures that equates to 27 years in normal use.

RAB Lighting announced that it now rates its LED-based lighting fixtures for 100,000 hrs of life, equating to 27 years based on a 10-hr usage day. The extended rating for the solid-state lighting (SSL) products is based in part on the TM-21 standard for projecting LED component lifetime that was released by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) last year.

Longer lifetime is a hot topic. Cree recently extended the warranty to ten years on most of its LED-based product line for commercial applications. For now, RAB has not addressed the warranty, but just the projected life. The extended life claim applies both to new and previously-released LED fixtures.

"TM-21 puts a stake in the ground and levels the playing field for LED fixture manufacturers," says Ross Barna, CEO of RAB Lighting. "RAB takes enormous pride in designing LED fixtures that perform as great as they look, so it was very gratifying to learn that our adherence to the strictest design standards and our LM-80 tests exceeding 10,000 hours have finally paid off."

In reality however, TM-21 is strictly-speaking an LED component standard. It's not meant to apply to a luminaire design where other sources of failure, such as the notorious electrolytic capacitor in the driver electronics, can cause system failure far before the LEDs reach end of life.

Thermal design

RAB did acknowledge the importance of system design, noting that its engineers develop robust thermal systems to keep the LEDs at proper temperature. The company said, "RAB engineers utilize state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamic software to study heat movement and airflow around LED fixtures." Still there are plenty of other failure modes.

We will also note that TM-21 calculations come in two flavors reported and calculated. The reported number to end of useful life is generally considered more valid. That number is limited to six times the LM-80 tested life used in TM-21 calculations.

LM-80 requires a minimum of 6000 hrs of testing and at the point the reported TM-21 life projection would be 36,000 hrs. After LED testing reaches 10,000 hrs, the reported life would be 60,000 hrs.

Apparently, RAB Lighting is basing its claims on a reported life projection so the LEDs that they are using would have been tested to the LM-80 standard for more than 16,000 hrs.

Conversely, calculated TM-21 results can be much higher and, while based on the same algorithm behind reported results, aren’t limited to six times the test duration . For instance, Cree contributed an article to LEDs Magazine earlier this year and used an example of real data with an LED projected to 290,000 hrs at L70 (more than 70% of initial lumen output).

Still, it bears repeating that LED life won't often be the determining factor in the lifetime of a well-designed SSL fixture. Don’t mistake lifetime projections for a warranty.

I’d like to know the DLC’s thoughts of this news. It's my understanding that the DLC won’t support any products that claim lifetimes in excess of the TM-21 reported lifetimes. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Call me a skeptic but I don't think of RAB as having the engineering expertise to get 100,000 hours. Cree MAYBE, are we to believe that RAB's DC equipted luminiare's have electrolytic capacitors that last that long, 100,000 hours that's doubtful. The same could be said for the drivers in these fixtures. Claims like this prompt me to want to speak to their technical experts and ask some good analytical questions and /or buy one and disassemble it and examine the components myself! If one were able to compare R+D and engineering budgets it's safe to assume that a leader like Philips would have the necessary financial resources to pull this off not RAB. I would have liked to have been on fly on the wall of the RAB boardroom on the "100,000" hour lifetime claim meeting - I could just imagine their marketing guys saying make the claim - match Cree while the guys in legal were pulling out the hair and cringing !

As CEO of RAB Lighting, I'd like to make a few quick points and respond to the comments in this article. 1) This article is based on a press release which you can read for yourself. The RAB press release clearly states that we have completed sufficient LM-80 testing based on IES guidelines and performed TM-21 calculations and published an LED Lifespan of 100,000hrs on our fixtures. We made no claims about driver performance because there are no known standards for measuring it-- I believe this article is misleading readers beyond the simple facts of what RAB has achieved. DLC is 100% on board with our TM-21 calculations because we 100% followed DLC instructions which are clearly published on their website here: http://designlights.org/solidstate.manufacturer.instructions.php DLC says manufacturers have to use the Energy Star TM-21 calculator, which is exactly what we did. All our LED products exceed 100,000hrs based on the TM-21 calculations and some of them exceed 200,000hrs! 3) Dennis: I'll try not to take offense at your comments but I do welcome you to call me personally (888-722-1000 ask for Ross) to discuss RAB's sizable commitment to LED R&D and explain to you how there are no electrolytic capacitors in our LED's that would effect LED lifespan- I'm sure you're thinking of drivers and I want to clarify that we aren't talking about drivers, we're talking about LEDs. There are no industry standards for driver lifespan measurements but we do offer a 5yr warranty on our drivers. RAB's warranty exceeds what Philips offers on most of their products and I guarantee you that RAB has more US based R&D than Philips. In addition, the 100,000hr claim was a simple decision, the US government (EPA) provided a calculator for TM-21 and we used it. Not a single dollar was spent changing our lifespan claim from 50,000 to 100,000hrs. 4) The real story here is that RAB has beaten most of the other lighting manufacturers to the punch on adopting the TM-21 standard and our numbers are simply fantastic! This is a testament to the effort and design capability RAB employs in creating our products.
