OSRAM opens skills development center for Penang LED plant
Date Announced: 07 May 2010
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors officially opens the OSRAM Skills Development Centre (OSDC) in Penang, Malaysia. The Centre will offer customized development programs to employees from the company’s LED manufacturing and wafer fabrication plants, especially in Asia. The training programs will create a highly skilled workforce ready for the challenges in the LED industry, enhancing the company in a strong position in this high growth market.
The goal of the OSDC is to support the organization’s growth. It is not just focused on operational and technical skills but also on career, academic and leadership development. With trainers from local Malaysia and overseas, a full suite of operational, technical and managerial programs will be conducted to help employees progress in all areas of work.
“The LED market has experienced explosive growth. Keeping pace in human resources is a critical factor in our success,” said Mr. Horst Rosenmueller, Managing Director of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “The OSDC provides the foundation for the company’s operations in Penang to achieve high performance in quality, cost and service.”
By collaborating with the academia as well as technical and business communities from Malaysia and around the globe, the OSDC will help the organization in Penang to make further advances on product research, design and development. This focus on human resources is aligned with the Malaysian Government’s call for businesses to compete not solely on cost but also on skilled labour.
The OSDC is part of the local community and the LED industry. In the future, the Centre will look to extending the training programs beyond employees in the OSRAM facilities in Penang. It is envisaged that the OSDC will become the ‘Learning Organization’ not only for OSRAM Opto Semiconductors but also for the LED industry.
