Seoul Semiconductor's WICOP LEDs exceed standard brightness and eliminate packaging
Sept. 6, 2016
World class LED company Seoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd, announced on September 5 that they are currently mass producing new products with a luminous efficiency of 210lm/W (350mA) called “WICOP”. As a product that is composed of a LED chip and phosphor only, it does not require packaging for wrapping the chip, such as frames and gold wires, etc. Therefore, this is a new concept LED product which does not require equipment or parts which need to be packaged, something that used to be deemed essential for LED manufacturing.
The new WICOP product (Y22) which was only launched recently has completely broken the conventional idea that if the product is structured simply with only a chip and phosphor, it would be hard to enhance luminous efficiency. The product was completed based on Seoul Semiconductor’s independent LED chip manufacturing technology and other related technologies. In particular, it has achieved higher luminous efficiency than packaged, conventional high power LED products. It has also demonstrated excellent performance and technology as it is more luminously efficient than CSP (Chip Scale Package), which is similar in appearance, by more than 17%.
As the company that developed WICOP LEDs, or the world’s first package-less LED, Seoul Semiconductor has supplied WICOP to both IT and automobile manufacturers since 2012. In 2015, it launched two models of WICOP lighting products. Now that it has started to mass produce WICOP with a 210lm/W luminous efficiency for the first time in the world, it has positioned itself as the company leading package-less LED products, and displayed its world class LED technologies.
The importance of high powered LEDs such as WICOP has rapidly increased recently in the LED world market. Strategies Unlimited, a market survey company, showed that in 2015, the importance of super high power LED products with a high luminous efficiency such as WICOP, took up 20% of the total LED market, and by 2020, it is expected to reach more than 30%.
Mr. Ki-bum Nam, CTO of Seoul Semiconductor, said, “The WICOP products which have been independently developed by Seoul Semiconductor would render the currently increasing investment in the packaging industry unnecessary, and will become the standard for next generation LEDs as it is an innovative product that reflects a new wind of change in the LED market.”. He added, “We will continue to develop various solutions related to WICOP for customers in addition to developing new WICOP products with a luminous efficiency of over 220lm/W by 2020, thereby opening the door to a new LED period.”
