Merlot Laboratories Inc. connects 800 LED bulbs to wireless mesh network for smart lighting demo

Merlot Laboratories Inc. exhibited the world first wireless media façade with 768 smart light bulbs in 2016 Chambit Seoul Lighting Fair. At the exhibition, Merlot Laboratories Inc. shaped the image of blinking eyes in 32x24 pixels by employing its own wireless networking technology and directly designed 768 smart LED bulbs which are composed of 30 RGB-controlled bulbs and 738 color-temperature-controlled bulbs.

Merlot Laboratories Inc. hopes to visualize the Korean proverb that “Time flies by in the blink of an eye” by using smart light bulbs and wireless network technology.

Smart Light Bulbs of Merlot Laboratories Inc.
All the LED bulbs used in the exhibition are products using LED driver IC developed by Merlot Laboratories Inc. The color-temperature-controlled bulb has an optical characteristic of 700 lm at 8 Watt. The LEDs can be arranged so that lights are spread all round through the remarkable miniaturization of the driver section. The internal wireless communication and the antenna sections are perfectly combined with the bulb, and the bulb is composed of only a few PCB boards. This smart light bulb is currently being developed and is expected to be release in December 2016 since its certification came to the final phase. The RGB-controlled bulb also has the same structure as color-temperature-controlled bulb and will be available in the first half of 2017.

Wireless Mesh Network Solution of Merlot Laboratories Inc.
Merlot Laboratories Inc. uses a proprietary wireless mesh network of multiple bulbs. Merlot Laboratories Inc. has thoroughly reworked network system based on the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY in order to find optimal solution to control numerous lights, and then succeeded in implementing both networking and application layers above the PHY. It guarantees low latency of communication message and high immunity on message error or loss due to wireless channel. By reducing redundancy and optimizing structure of networking, this network is more efficient and robust than previous works of other commercial solutions. Since it is possible to cover thousands of nodes simultaneously and extend its capacity more and more, it is proper to the extensive network of lights and can be also deployed as a backbone of IoT ecosystem.
