PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS – There’s a good reason why the owners of the Atlantis Resort chose the aptly named Paradise Island as the location of their world famous destination. Surrounded by crystal blue water, rimmed with white sandy beaches and touched by gentle tropical breezes, the 685-acre island just off shore from Nassau offers visitors an experience that is – well – heavenly.
With its rich, vibrant and infinitely deep colors, the Nexus 4x4 panel from CHAUVET Professional was right at home in this paradisiacal setting when it was used on the beachfront stage of the 2014 Atlantis Paradise Music Festival.
Lighting Designer James Schipper of Kinetic Lighting in Glendale, CA included the Nexus panels in his outdoor stage rig and drew on their impressive color rendering capabilities to create looks that matched the azure sea and sky in the background. His vibrant light show also got some rousing cheers when the Nexus panels, which were positioned prominently downstage, were used to display the teal and yellow colors of the Bahamian flag.
“The color rendering of the Nexus panels was extraordinary,” said Schipper. “We got a lot of comments on site about how they complemented the sea and sky. We also got great cheers when using teal and yellow of the Bahamian national flag. It isn’t often that a lighting fixture gets cheered, but they did.”
Schipper used ten Nexus panels on the overhead truss (trimmed at roughly 28 feet) downstage on the festival’s 40’ by 40’ main stage. He also used eight panels on the indoor ballroom stage.
The intense output of the Nexus panels was the key factor in Schipper choosing them for the popular festival, which featured a superstar lineup of artists such as Jewel, Rascal Flatts, Casey James and The Band Perry. “This was a day/night outdoor event,” said the LD. “The doors opened at four in the afternoon and the concert went on to 11 o’clock. I selected the Nexus panels because I wanted a fixture that I could use not only as a traditional blinder, but one that would also offer visual appeal as a standalone viewable source during daylight hours.”
Elaborating on his vision for lighting the festival, Schipper noted: “For the main Paradise Beach stage design I wanted a full stage look that would be effective during daylight hours and then really kick off after dark. So I used lots of LED fixtures that would give us something nice to look at during the day, when their actual effective output was diminished. All this of course while minding budget, international shipping constraints, and the always-possible tropical storm risk.”
Schipper used an alternating pattern of LED washes and moving beams punctuated by larger beam framing fixtures to create a sense of depth as well as movement on the main stage. He positioned aerial effects on his downstage truss to use as audience lighting, band specials and downstage cross lighting. He also used 24 COLORado Tri Tour fixtures to uplight palm trees behind the stage. As for the Nexus panels, they served as “super intense” blinders throughout the festival.
The rig worked out so well that the LDs from the guest artists had few if any changes to make. “Andy Knighton with Rascal Flatts, Jay Waddell with The Band Perry, and Chris Reade with Dierks Bentley were all fantastic to work with on this,” said Schipper. “I reviewed my designs with them, and amazingly they all were more than satisfied with the rigs for each stage. No changes were necessary. Each LD spent some time during sound checks with my programming team updating their shows and writing looks. All went very smoothly. My lighting director Eric Barth did an excellent job handling programming for Jewel. And my programmer Geoffrey Galper did likewise for Dan & Shay.”
Schipper also singled out Angel City Designs for making the festival such a success. “I was the festival LD”, he said. “I designed the rig and Angel City Designs was the event producer. Mark Yumkas, the President/Managing Partner, is fantastic to work with. Angel City, their client, and the touring LDs were thrilled. We far exceeded everyone's expectations and are already planning for next year's festival.”
