New York's Times Square shines brighter thanks to Digital Display Company D3
Oct. 26, 2010
Date Announced: 26 Oct 2010 New York – D3 LED, LLC (D3), the world's leader in specialized LED digital display applications, celebrated the unveiling last week of its two newest LED display spectaculars in New York’s Times Square for Disney Store and Aéropostale.Aéropostale, Inc. opened to the public its new 19,000 square foot Aéropostale flagship store in Times Square located at 1515 Broadway and 45th Street on Friday, October 22nd at 12pm ET. A key component of this exciting new store opening is the brand’s use of interactive LED display systems that transition from external space to within the store itself. D3 proudly served as design, engineering and manufacturing partner, display consultant and on-site project manager for digital display applications included at Aeropostale Times Square. D3 already has a dominant presence in Times Square as the company responsible for creating digital display spectaculars for ABC Studios, Forever 21, M&M’s, JVC, Walgreens (the nation’s largest, most advanced digital super-sign soaring 341 feet above the street), and most recently for Disney Store—which was just unveiled to the world on October 21, 2010. The Company has installed more than 70% of all Times Square LED displays since 2006.D3 design engineered the nearly 2000 square foot LED display for Aéropostale Times Square. The display’s complex curves and projection restraints required D3’s team to custom design more than 1100 parts and pieces to bring the vision to reality. The most complex curve wrapping the corner required a custom vertical module similar to the design D3 utilized for the ABC Studios famous curved display. The LED display also features a serpentine Hi-Def pixel surface of 3700 pixels wide by 576 pixels high. “Based on D3’s extensive experience with custom curved LED display systems, our engineering team leveraged our scalable display technology to develop two new custom products for Aéropostale,” said Jason Barak, D3 managing partner, sales and marketing. Created by D3, with content developed by Pixelfire Productions, one of the most unique features of the new LED display system at Aéropostale Times Square is the “AERO Dance Cam.” This interactive feature is facilitated by a tiny camera mounted within a display module that allows customers inside the store to show off their best dance moves, which are then recorded by a sensor triggered camera and broadcast to the external LED display above the store approximately 20 minutes later. Customers can then simply walk outside and see themselves dancing and interacting with Aéropostale models right on the digital display. "Pixelfire Productions has worked with D3 on other Times Square installations using our Pixit technology to capture, display and share photos; we’re excited to introduce video into the equation,” said Steve Bumstead, president, Pixelfire Productions. To enable the dance cam and display interactivity, D3 developed a multiplayer synchronized playback system with real time encoding and Flash interactivity. Editorial Note: High-resolution images, video, technical and design specs and FAQ sheets for Aéropostale and Disney Store LED displays are available to press. Jason Barak, managing partner, D3, is available for media interviews to discuss the design, interactive capabilities and functionality of Aéropostale and Disney Store LED displays in Times Square.
