Welcome to the LEDs Magazine HortiCann Light + Tech Newsletter for Jan. 10, 2022. I know it’s getting old to hear/read, but I can’t believe we’re already 10 days into the new year. LinkedIn has notified me that our group publisher Steve Beyer is celebrating his second anniversary with Endeavor Business Media. Time flies! And we have other occasions to spotlight as well. If you don’t subscribe to our weekly News & Insights, you may be unaware that our longtime chief editor Maury Wright has officially retired his post this year. We now have a proper tribute on our website. I’ll admit that I struggled a bit because I notoriously overthink my own writing. So I asked my colleagues to help me refine what needed to be said about Maury, and I think it came together all right. Somehow I refrained from sneaking a “FRIENDS” reference into the column, but I’ll take the liberty here and squawk, “It’s the end of an era!” (Please don't unsubscribe.)
In all seriousness, of course we also want to spotlight the addition of award-winning journalist Wanda Lau to our team as editorial director. When I spoke to Wanda during our editorial search, I was immediately struck by the number of different ways she has applied herself in media & communications — as a writer, editor, freelancer, DEI advocate, podcaster, events moderator and speaker, awards program administrator. Wanda has clearly cultivated a thoughtful and well-rounded career in media, and I am excited to get to work alongside her. Like many operations, we are going through a period of renewal and strategizing with our internal team, our content and events, and our partners. Much as I despise being vague, I will tease out that I hope to have an update on our plans for the 2022 HortiCann Light + Tech Conference for you soon. Our advisors and friends in the LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) supply and design chain, across research & development, associations, consultancies, and market transformation programs have been invaluable in lending their perspective to how we shape our content and events to address evolving audiences and emerging applications. Just about six years ago, we had only begun to scratch the surface of SSL in horticulture. Now we’ve expanded the concepts and practice to controlled environment agriculture, which encompasses a more holistic view of systems used in indoor growing scenarios but also in some unusual places, like the International Space Station. You’ll find a detailed wrap-up report on the 2021 HortiCann event in our upcoming January/February issue, which covers more of these industry shifts. Subscribers will get notified directly to their inbox when the mobile-responsive issue is live. You’ll find more of interest in the body of today’s newsletter. Please keep in touch about content we post or to pitch a contributed article. - Carrie Meadows, (603) 891-9382, [email protected]
