Date Announced: 23 Sep 2008On August 29th 2008 the restored city hall in Venlo reopened with a grand spectacle. This sixteenth-century building at the marketplace in the center of the city has undergone a major interiour renovation. The old city hall has been adapted to modern requirements such as accessibility for wheelchair users. Important principles in the renovation were sustainability, taking into account environmental requirements and energy efficiency. Aesthetic changes, taking inspiration from the appearance of the city hall in its earliest time, are made on the outside of the city hall. In addition to conventional base lighting, artist Nard Reijnders designed a light and sound show that takes place on the exteriour of the building. Reijnders composed a symphony of light, video and animation. Lagotronics BV supplied and installed the LED lighting, beamer and showcontrol in this permanent installation. The lighting design is done by LightingView (from Essent Lighting BV) and Studio DL. A sound system was installed which is also applicable for other events on the market square. The four sides of the facade of the city hall are lit with 88 pieces DecaLED® Color Wash 36. This allows for the powerful, homogeneous lighting in all possible colours of the RGB spectrum which Reijnders had in mind. The DecaLED® Color Wash 36 is IP65 certified, which is required for this outdoor installation. The roof of the city hall is illuminated with 29 pieces cold white DecaLED® Color Bar 36. This product is also IP65 certified. The choice for sustainable and energy-efficient LED lighting is fully in line with the principles of the client. On the upper floor of the building at the other side of the city hall, at a distance of about 35 meters, a Barco FLM R20+ was installed. This quiet, compact but powerful beamer (20.000 ansi lumens, a contrast ratio of 1.800:1) allows a video projection of 20x15 metres on the facade of the city hall. It completes the spectacle in the play starring the Venlo city hall. LED lighting, video and audio are driven by a central showcontroller by AV Stumpfl. Programming and installation was done by the skilled technicians from Lagotronics BV, supervised by Nard Reijnders. The result is an unprecedented audiovisual show that transforms the ancient town of Venlo into a tourist pearl in the city centre.
