Pegasus Lighting donates solar-powered LED lighting products to Ghana village project

May 13, 2014
Pegasus Lighting, an online lighting retailer with headquarters in Beaver Falls, PA and an office in Raleigh, NC, is celebrating their 15th anniversary in May with an effort to bring light to a village in upper Ghana near Charikpong without electricity. The month-long "Bring The Light" campaign begins with Pegasus Lighting providing a $1,500 donation of solar powered personal lights with USB charger to the village through Unite To Light, a non-profit dedicated to providing low cost lighting to those without electricity. The solar powered lights will also be available on Pegasus Lighting's website throughout the month for customers to purchase and directly donate to the village. For every 15 customers that join Pegasus Lighting in donating lights the company will donate one additional light. The company’s goal is to have 100 lights donated by their customers in addition to the 50 donated by the company.

Studies have shown that a lack of suitable home lighting is directly linked to illiteracy, poverty and health problems. Areas of the world without electricity often rely on fuels such as kerosene for lighting. Not only are these kinds of fuels unhealthy, resulting in environmental pollution, they do not provide a quality light source for reading and studying. The personal solar USB charger and LED task lights donated and made available by Pegasus Lighting will charge during the day to provide safe and inexpensive lighting for the Ghana village throughout the night. "We've been grateful to provide our customers with their lighting needs over the last 15 years and we wanted them to be a part of our "Bring The Light" campaign," said Christopher Johnson, President and CEO of Pegasus Lighting. "We hope to leverage the power of our brand to help promote Unite To Light and their wonderful initiative," he added. Unite to Light is a not for profit corporation dedicated to providing low cost lighting to those without electricity, and eliminating the health and environmental issues associated with existing light sources used by this population, such as kerosene.
