LIGHT BITES | New LED launches from Lumileds, Luminus, and Violumas

Aug. 5, 2024
LED developers continue to push performance in compact emitters, digging in to refine thermal management and optical designs for a range of use cases.

Several LED businesses have recently announced new devices that serve demands for high-intensity applications. From the need for visible-light packages with punch in white-light and color display designs to ultraviolet disinfection, therapeutic, and inspection applications, LEDs coming out of California-headquartered Lumileds, Luminus, and Violumas demonstrate key improvements in beam distribution or throw, thermal stability, and lifetime.

Lumileds’ LUXEON HL4Z

The San Jose, Calif.-based LED developer recently released its undomed LUXEON HL4Z that offers more than 1,400 lm from its 2.16mm2 LES when driven at max 3.5A current — a performance enabled by its large thermal pad. The high-power, 3535 LED package offers multiple CCTs (3000, 4000, 5700, and 6500K) and CRI options (70, 80, and 90) to suit a variety of high-intensity application needs.

“There are many applications from stadiums to torches and even forward lighting on bicycles, mopeds, e-bikes, and motorcycles that require very high-intensity light and until now, the pursuit of application efficiency has required a compromise in optical design,” said Noman Rangwala, Lumileds’ head of product marketing and management. “LUXEON HL4Z resolves the dilemma by delivering the output, intensity, and efficacy that simply make the intended application better than has previously been possible.”

As an aside, Lumileds recently closed the sales of its Lamps and Accessories business to automotive parts manufacturer First Brands Group, LLC, which CEO Steve Barlow says will help the company to “focus on [its] core LED business.” Barlow’s comments on the transaction echo a recent perspective from Cree LED president Joe Clark on maintaining an eyes-on-the-prize concentration on application-specific innovation in LEDs for high-value targets.

Luminus’ MP-5050 white LEDs and SFT-03X RGB chipset

Moving on to Sunnyvale, Calif., solid-state lighting solutions provider Luminus has launched new mid-power, white-light LEDs in 5050 packages for outdoor and industrial lighting applications. Both the MP-5050-240E (6V) and MP-5050-810E (24V) achieve L90 > 36,000 hr, and at 70 CRI, 4000K CCT, and 1W drive current, they deliver 233 lm/W efficacy — allowing finished luminaires to meet DLC Premium classification. The square LES, low-resistance thermal design, and availability in 3- and 5-step MacAdam ellipse binning bring reliability and uniformity of color and light distribution to high-output street and area luminaires such as car park, post-top, flood, tunnel, stadium, and high-bay lights.

Luminus has also added the SFT-03X red-green-blue chipset to its projection product lineup for high color saturation in consumer and industrial imaging and video applications. The LES measures 0.345mm2 — a footprint that is optimized for use with microdisplays and extended depth of focus. The 50-lm light engine can be embedded into a range of consumer and industrial devices and equipment such as companion projectors for smartphones, augmented reality wearables, industrial signage, retail displays, and factory automation equipment.

Violumas’ COB UV modules

Fremont, Calif.-based Violumas, a UV LED provider, relies on its patented 3-PAD LED flip chip and Super Pillar MCPCB (metal-core printed circuit board), with integrated fan-cooled heatsink, as the foundation for its newest VC4X4 chip-on-board arrays.

As background, Cofan USA subsidiary Cofan PCB developed the Super Pillar thermal management technology after it entered the LED market between 2005 and 2010, and introduced the 3-PAD flip chip IP after establishing Flip Chip Opto in 2015. FC Opto was absorbed into Violumas in 2016 and the UV LED unit began to bring UV products to market in 2018. Violumas says its flip-chip architecture with integrated heat dissipation structures allows low thermal resistance of 0.1°C/W — enabling improved efficiency without liquid-cooling solutions.

In the VC4X4, 16 UV LEDs are densely packed under a 90-degree fused silica lens, enabling intensity up to 299 mW/cm2 at 10mm distance depending on the selected configuration. The UV LED modules are available in 265, 275, 295, and 310nm UV-C and UV-B wavelengths to serve in disinfection, spectroscopy, and phototherapy equipment designs. A dimmable LED driver kit and fan power supply are available on request for evaluation kits.
