LEDs Magazine Sapphire Awards program announces sixth year’s finalists (UPDATED)
Now in its sixth year, the LEDs Magazine Sapphire Awards has annually recognized the contributions of the LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) supply chain in producing high-performance, quality engineered components and systems into the commercial distribution stream. Each year, a team composed of LEDs Magazine staff, Strategies in Light advisory board members, and other colleagues collaborate to deliver an awards program that culminates in acknowledging the finest innovations in SSL technology.
The 2020 Sapphire Awards winners will be announced during a reception aboard the USS Midway on Feb. 12, 2020 — during the week of Strategies in Light in San Diego. This year’s less formal reception will allow attendees to peruse the unique museum aboard the Midway and network with their peers while sharing cocktails and tapas into the evening.
“Coming into our sixth year, we knew that we would want to focus on the quality of the nominated products and their role in pushing the industry to perform better and seek new levels of engineering and design ingenuity,” said chief editor Maury Wright. “We simplified the ceremony and pursued an inspirational venue that offers an environment which encourages industry peers to socialize and celebrate together, and share their experiences with colleagues in a more casual atmosphere.” He continued, “I’m pleased to see that there have been many exciting advances in products that push the boundaries beyond simply providing illumination that serves, and instead deliver improved quality of experience.”
You’ll find the shortlist of finalists across 17 technology and application categories below. Join us at the Sapphire Awards reception to celebrate the winners in February. The Illumineer of the Year finalists, representing an individual or team who has excelled in advancing the commercialization of novel and quality LED or SSL technology, will be announced soon. We look forward to sharing that with you!

LEDs Magazine thanks its colleagues and advisory board members for evaluating this year’s entries and ensuring a level playing field by ensuring their votes are kept private. Every year we ask a lot from the team and from our professional network in participating across the Sapphire Awards and the Strategies in Light conference, and their counsel and willingness to share their expertise only serve to improve the program.
Revisit the past Sapphire Awards finalists in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Carrie Meadows | Editor-in-Chief, LEDs Magazine
Carrie Meadows has more than 20 years of experience in the publishing and media industry. She worked with the PennWell Technology Group for more than 17 years, having been part of the editorial staff at Solid State Technology, Microlithography World, Lightwave, Portable Design, CleanRooms, Laser Focus World, and Vision Systems Design before the group was acquired by current parent company Endeavor Business Media.
Meadows has received finalist recognition for LEDs Magazine in the FOLIO Eddie Awards, and has volunteered as a judge on several B2B editorial awards committees. She received a BA in English literature from Saint Anselm College, and earned thesis honors in the college's Geisel Library. Without the patience to sit down and write a book of her own, she has gladly undertaken the role of editor for the writings of friends and family.
Meadows enjoys living in the beautiful but sometimes unpredictable four seasons of the New England region, volunteering with an animal shelter, reading (of course), and walking with friends and extended "dog family" in her spare time.
