LEDs Magazine 40 Under 40 Profile: Basar Erdener
With a career that has spanned lighting design to academic R&D to product development, Basar Erdener has by many accounts a unique perspective on the LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) sectors. A colleague said of Erdener, “He was able to blend his product design career with his own research from the Lighting Research Center [LRC] and his lighting design knowledge gained in Europe. Thanks to his contributions, the products he managed are very well designed, specific to the lighting application and have a very strong story behind them. He has a very positive and solution-oriented approach.”
He also has a broad educational basis having earned an undergraduate degree in industrial and product design, a master’s degrees in art, design, and architecture and finally a master’s degree with the LRC including being published in LRC research. According to another colleague, that base of experience allows Erdener to “finesse the small details, but also see the bigger picture.”
Prior to working for LED Linear, he worked at Zumtobel and WAC Lighting. He has won a number of awards including the Robert Brice Thompson Luminaire Design Award 2011. Erdener is an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), has spoken at a number of industry events including Strategies in Light and US Department of Energy (DOE) workshops. He holds numerous patents and also pursues interest in fields related to SSL including energy, biology, sustainability, and human-centered design.
Carrie Meadows | Editor-in-Chief, LEDs Magazine
Carrie Meadows has more than 20 years of experience in the publishing and media industry. She worked with the PennWell Technology Group for more than 17 years, having been part of the editorial staff at Solid State Technology, Microlithography World, Lightwave, Portable Design, CleanRooms, Laser Focus World, and Vision Systems Design before the group was acquired by current parent company Endeavor Business Media.
Meadows has received finalist recognition for LEDs Magazine in the FOLIO Eddie Awards, and has volunteered as a judge on several B2B editorial awards committees. She received a BA in English literature from Saint Anselm College, and earned thesis honors in the college's Geisel Library. Without the patience to sit down and write a book of her own, she has gladly undertaken the role of editor for the writings of friends and family.
Meadows enjoys living in the beautiful but sometimes unpredictable four seasons of the New England region, volunteering with an animal shelter, reading (of course), and walking with friends and extended "dog family" in her spare time.
